In general, this research sought to determine the motives and philosophical perspectives of the late President Corazon Cory C. Aquino as reflected in three of her speeches. Using the lens of Burke's Dramatism Theory through Pentadic Analysis, this study found that agent dominates among all the other terms in her three speeches which shows that she saw agent as the most important of all the other elements in her speeches. The ideas that fall under agent were categorized by the researcher into four, namely: (1) the Filipino people, (2) Cory Aquino herself, (3) Ferdinand Marcos, and (4) Ninoy Aquino. Agent, being the most dominant term in her speeches further reveals that Cory Aquino was an idealist. Finally, the findings of this study would definitely provide the Filipinos an in-depth understanding about Cory Aquino's ideals, beliefs, and values - being one of the most important figures of democracy in Philippine and world history.

The knowledge of how women are represented in a specific advertisement to hit the target audience of the products being introduced is not only confined in a certain field of discipline and groups of people; instead it traverses to different aspects of humanity where consumerism is fundamental. Thus, this study attempted to determine the iconic representations of women and find out how these have shaped the role they portrayed in the magazine advertisements. Using the qualitative analysis particularly Ferdinand de Saussaure's semiotic theory, icons on beauty products, vehicle, food and beverage, clothing and accessories, and vitamins and food supplements were analyzed. The analysis of results revealed that the iconic representations of women in magazine ads were relative size, feminine touch or touching any object, function ranking, the family, ritualization of subordination, licensed withdrawal, body display, feminine power and women empowerment which come in various signifiers and signified concepts. These iconic representations shaped the roles of women portrayed in the ads which include their roles as sex object, mother/nurturer, physically attractive or decorative, working or career woman, dependent, recreational and authority.

This book, ASPECTS OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS, synthesizes brilliantly the works of scholars with more recent examples for clarity and precision. It definitely would serve the purpose for which it is designed. -Professor Hyeladzira Ali Balami (University of Maiduguri)
This is a fascinating book that addresses many critical aspects of applied linguistics as the study of language-in-use and language-in-education. Concepts and theories are well treated, definitions unambiguously addressed, and examples carefully presented and applied. This book will be useful for undergraduate and post-graduate students in the areas of Linguistics, English as well as in Communication Arts. - Professor Frances Ngozi Chukwukere (Imo State University). -
